OSSM: MIESCOR's Enabler Towards Safe, Sustainable and Environmentally Aware Operations

Occupational Safety and Sustainability Management (OSSM), previously called Safety, Health, and Environment Management (SHE) is the department that holds a vital role in implementing safety, health, and environmental guidelines and policies of MIESCOR. It was crafted to provide and develop the overall strategic direction on Safety Health and Sustainability and represent the company to government agencies such as DOLE, BFP, DENR, and LLDA.

Parts of its activities are toolbox meetings, pre-work orientation, Safety Committee Meeting, Awareness and Training Program, and Review of Compliance. These orient the site workers before starting their jobs, teach them the basics, dos, and don’ts, and most especially ensure the safety protocols being conducted and followed in accordance with the mandates coming from our government.

Respective training and activities such as Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Control (HIRAC), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), site inspection, and Job safety Observations (JSO) are also being managed and supervised to ensure that all information needed are well disseminated and guidelines featuring safety and sustainable practices are strictly implemented to create a much safer environment.

OSSM also conducted the COVID-19 company initiatives with workshops on emergency response to Covid-19, purchase of medical equipment for emergency transport vehicles, distribution of air purifiers and HEPA filters, and Covid-19 Safety protocol inspections to maintain and provide safety and prevent the virus from spreading.

However, all these initiatives and efforts must not only be the common ground. The Head of OSSM, Mr. PJ Figueroa III, determinedly stated that it is not just the knowledge, skills, and plans that are important but also the understanding of the situation and alignment of everyone’s goals - “Dapat trained ang mga tao and naiintindihan nila kung ano yung goal natin. Sa ngayon binabantayan yung preventable and behavioral.”

Sustainability Initiatives Among and Beyond MIESCOR Communities

MIESCOR, led by the OSSM team, is committed and united with the DENR, not only in ensuring that it complies with the national regulations and standards but also in its goals and campaigns in attaining a sustainable and healthier environment. Recently, a Tree planting- Adopt a Hectare” campaign was held. The OSSM team planted about 500 seedlings of indigenous tree species last November 19, 2021, on the 1-hectare greening adoption in Antipolo City, Rizal. The adopted hectare is on the portion of forestlands established for the National Greening Program of DENR in response to the threat of climate change and global warming and to continuously contribute to the sustainability of the community nearby MIESCOR project sites. Aligned with One Meralco’s sustainability agenda, MIESCOR, together with the OSSM team as its frontrunner, looks beyond what it can still do and provide for the community.

Recently, OSSM was tasked to lead a much-anticipated program called the “Green Mobility Program” that eyes the transition of using internal combustion vehicles to electric ones. Although this is still in talks and in question of how feasible the program can be, this can surely contribute and strengthen our sustainability campaigns. Apart from this, the “Zero-Waste Management Program” that aims to reduce and monitor all the wastes coming from the company and transform them into reusable or recyclable materials, is also being participated by MIESCOR.

Other projects that OSSM have worked on are MIESCOR’s Quarantine Facility in Antipolo, cleanup drive in Barangay San Juan, Antipolo, Brigada Eskwela in Cuenca, Batangas, Manolo, Fortich, and Ambuklao, Baguio, provision of assistance to nearest barangay during typhoon/ floods and MIESCOR’s Vehicle Identification System.
